Steamboat Creates is filling the calendar this May with visual art, community events and live theater.
The momentum begins Friday, May 1, with First Friday ArtWalk, when the Depot opens a new exhibition, “Earth Woven,” by artist Gwendolyn Hill. Developed after six years of research, Gwendolyn’s body of work explores the relationship between European-American cultural values and the wisdom embedded in Indigenous ways of living. The series reflects on knowledge set aside during the colonial period and considers how those perspectives still offer important lessons for the health of communities and the land.
Also this Friday, the Depot will host a Mother’s Day sale, giving visitors another reason to stop in during the evening and shop for gifts created by local and regional artists ahead of the holiday.
Later in the month, Steamboat Creates brings back one of its most anticipated annual traditions with “Cabaret: Tale of Two Seasons.” This year’s show features a new lineup of skits, sharp satire and big laughs inspired by the wild, unpredictable weather that defines life in Steamboat. Known for its spirited energy and hometown humor, Cabaret showcases the creativity and comedic talent of local performers in a fast-paced evening that celebrates the quirks of mountain town life.
Performances run Wednesday-Saturday, May 13–16, at the Depot Art Center. Tickets and additional information are available at www.SteamboatCreates.org.
