Strings Music Festival Announces Steamboat Summer Schedule

06/17/2014 03:06PM ● By Jack Burger

The 27th season of Strings Music Festival welcomes contemporary, classical and collaborative performing arts events, recognizable names like Bruce Hornsby and Asleep at the Wheel, young up-and-coming acts, seasoned chamber musicians and local favorites. Opening night is fast approaching with America on June 21.

The summer season opens June 21 with a Different Tempo series show from the timeless classic, America followed by George Winston on June 24.  The Different Tempo series will then wind through a myriad of genres, from world music with Jesse Cook to Beatles tribute band, The Fab Four, to singer-songwriter country tunes with Strings regular Brent Rowan joined on stage this year by Larry Gatlin. The season also brings vocalist Lisa Fisher who has recently been showcased in the Oscar-winning 2013 documentary 20 Feet From Stardom.

This season also showcases the first year of the new Steinway Model D concert grand piano and some of the top players from across the nation to break in the keys.  George Winston performs early in the season on June 24.  Legendary 90-year-old classical pianist Menahem Pressler will return to Strings for two nights and a special appearance at a fundraising event at a private Steamboat residence. 12-year-old piano genius Emily Bear takes the stage with her Jazz Trio on August 9, and the season comes to an end with a much-anticipated solo piano performance by 13-time Grammy nominee Bruce Hornsby.

The Classical series led by Music Directors Andrés Cárdenes and Monique Mead brings in major players and soloists from across the globe including pianist Jon Kimura Parker performing with the Strings Festival Orchestra on July 26 and a night of dance collaborations with Perry-Mansfield on July 5.

The free Music on the Green series begins on June 26 and continues every Thursday at the Yampa River Botanic Park with several local acts including Acutonic and Leaner, Lunker & Friends. The Tuesday morning Youth Series sees acts like The Not-Its! and the high-energy African drum and dance ensemble Fara Tolno & Kissidugu.
