Sherry Reed’s career as a forest ranger suited her temperament well. So does her retirement.

When Steamboat Magazine profiled Reed in winter 1993, she was the Hahns Peak district ranger on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. She cited the true multi-use nature of the Routt, plus the opportunity to employ the latest resources to develop projects in a way that was easier on the land, as two main reasons she loved her work.

Today, her enthusiasm for the wilderness has not waned. While much of her time on trails with her horse, Rio, and dog, Nelson, is spent throughout the general forest, she appreciates the difference when she enters the special place of Wilderness.  “Especially riding alone far into the Zirkels, there is a definite sense that we are only visitors and really don’t control what happens there,” she says.

In the winters when she’s not cross country skiing, she travels to play golf.
