Public Information Meeting: Lower Mountain Lighting Project to Introduce Night Skiing

Lower Mountain Lighting Project to Introduce Night Skiing - start: 07/31/2013 - 05:30 PM
The Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, July 31st from 5:30pm to 6:30pm providing information on the proposed lower mountain lighting project for night skiing slated for the 2013/2014 winter season at the Steamboat Ski Area. Everyone with an interest in the project, and particularly owners of property and businesses in the mountain village area, is invited to attend.
With the Promenade improvements and the associated positive momentum across the mountain village, the resort is looking to provide night skiing and riding from the top of Christie Peak via the Christie Peak Express chairlift to the base area. Roughly 1,000 vertical feet of terrain is expected to be available on several trails including Sitz, See Me/See Ya, Vogue, Stampede and Lil’ Rodeo Terrain Park.
Since night skiing first emerged on the scene, lighting technology has made dramatic advancements. Steamboat Ski Area is looking to utilize new technology developed by Ultra-Tech™ Lighting that significantly improves the night skiing experience for both skiers/riders and other resort guests and residents. The system utilizes a comprehensive line of magnetic induction lighting (MIL) specifically tailored to address the complexities and unique requirements of illuminating snow in all its varieties while minimizing glare and reflected light visible by the community and adjacent property owners.
“I expect this meeting will surprise some people when they see how sophisticated night skiing lighting has become,” said Doug Allen, vice president of mountain operations for the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “It’s important to us that folks have all the information on this activity as we see night skiing being a key component to enhanced vitality of the mountain village community.”
The Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation’s application is currently planned to move through the permit process with public meetings with Planning Commission at 5:00pm on August 8th and City Council at 5:00pm on August 20th.
